Georges CLAIRIN (Paris 1843 – 1919 Belle-Île-en-Mer) - Lot 21
Georges CLAIRIN (Paris 1843 – 1919 Belle-Île-en-Mer) Soldier in the Franco-Prussian War 1870–1871 Watercolor on paper 45 x 30.5 cm Signed “G. Clairin”; dated “1870–71”; inscribed “To my friend and comrade-in-arms Briand”; located “Paris” in the lower right corner Initially a student of Isidore Pils at the École des Beaux-Arts, Georges Clairin went on to exhibit at the Salon beginning in 1866. Known for his Orientalist and Symbolist paintings, his portraits of Sarah Bernhardt, and his monumental set designs, he was an artist whose works were as varied as they were original. Here, the artist presents a touching portrait of a French soldier during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, likely his comrade-in-arms Briand, to whom the work is dedicated.
