Esther presented to King Ahasuerus - Lot 329
Esther presented to King Ahasuerus Flemish tapestry, probably Oudenaarde Late 17th century Approx. 280 x 290 cm This large and rare tapestry illustrates a scene from the story of Esther. The young woman is shown on the left-hand side of the composition, surrounded by male figures: servant, soldier and probably her guardian Mordecai. She is led to King Ahasuerus, depicted on his throne in the midst of palatial architecture, dominating the scene. The slightly bowed head and the hand on her breast - a reference to the modest Venus - convey Esther's humility, which is matched by the elegant sobriety of her clothing. There are few contextual elements, but they are sufficient to understand the scene: the oriental costumes identify Ahasuerus and his court, while the presence of the dog symbolizes the marriage between the two protagonists. Wide border with rosary frieze and plant bouquets on gold background. The tapestry is brightly colored and retains its original border. The tapestry is in good condition. It is reduced in height and width. Expert : Alexandre CHEVALIER
