RENNES 1715 - 1716 - Lot 131
RENNES 1715 - 1716
Pair of silver bayonet or dome-shaped dusters. They stand on a pedestal chased with gadroons on the lid, and the baluster-shaped body is embossed with appliques up to the middle, highlighted with a row of fillets. The appliques, on an amati background, are of three alternating designs: lanceolate leaves, fleurons and lambrequins. The decoration continues with the engraving of a coat of arms (unidentified) topped by a count's crown. The upper rim is engraved with culottes intersected by roses in rushes, underlined by pompons on an amati background. The dome is pierced with navette panels framing four-leaf crosses, alternating with bands of interlaced rushes on an amati background. The lid is topped by a spinning top on a leafy terrace.
Master goldsmith: Jean ROYSARD, received in 1709 (hallmarks on the reverse of the foot).
Weight: 425 g and 415 g - height: 24 cm - diameter of base: 8.1 cm and 8.2 cm
Dome-shaped saupoudroirs were replaced by sugar spoons in the 1740s, and we can assume that they were melted down as they became obsolete and out of fashion to make way for more manageable objects. This pair of saupoudroirs is extremely rare and very rarely seen at auction in France.
However, we can cite the case of a Breton saupoudroir originally made as a pair mentioned by Cabinet Portier during the recent sale at Beaussant Lefèvre dated March 28, 2025, under n°59, of which "the other copy, constituting the original pair, was sold on May 16, 1930, in the sale of Mlle Puiforcat's collection under catalog n°52, then on June 5, 2018 in a sale at Maître Fraysse under n°79".
But this pendant was not included in the sale.....
