GERICAULT Théodore Rouen 1791 - Paris 1824 Horses in the pasture, or the bay horse and the white horse Pen, black ink and watercolor. Glued to sheet (small loss on left) Signed lower right in pen and brown ink. Annotated in pen on the backing sheet, bottom right Géricault, top N° 14, and bottom left Chevaux Percherons. H. 25.3 - W. 31.5 cm Provenance: Former C. du Soulier collection; still in the family to this day. Analogies: Study related to the painting in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Dijon, Horses in the Pasture, by Clément, Géricault's first historian, circa 1820-1824. (Cf. 1 - Serge Lemoine, Donation Granville, Tome 1, n°122, p. 145 - Ville de Dijon 1976). 2 - Philippe Grunchec, Tout l'œuvre peint de Théodore Géricault, n° 140, pp. 123 124 - Paris 1978). The Dijon painting was the subject of a counterpart lithograph, entitled Chevaux flamands, dated 1822 (Cf. Catalogue de l'exposition Géricault, Dessins et estampes des collections de l'Ecole des Beaux - Arts, E. 53, p. 255 ; Géricault ; Lit. De G. Engelmann - Paris ENSBA 1997). There are some differences in the position of the white horse's neck, which is upright here and down in the painting and lithograph, and in the motif of the two trees.
