The young cook
watercolor on paper
12 x 7.5 cm (sheet view)
in frame
Joseph Bail worked with his father, Jean Antoine Bail, and later with Jean Léon Gérôme and Carolus Duran. He is renowned for his talent in genre scenes. Influenced by realism and naturalism, he captures everyday life with precision and luminosity. He regularly exhibits his work at the Paris Salon. In addition to the Salon, he participated in international exhibitions.
Among his notable works, the Hermitage Museum holds "Le Marmiton" (1893). Close to our watercolor in subject and touch, this work features a young cook. The details of his uniform and gestures reveal the artist's realism and talent for capturing the atmosphere of everyday life. The soft light accentuates the cook's expression.
